You can see them from the shore - some of the most popular spots to watch them are Poipu Beach, Kukui O Lono Park at Kalaheo, Kalalau Trail on the North Shore, and the The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.
You get, however, much closer if you take one of the popular boat tours that take you out to the ocean to watch the whales close-by and listen to some information about them.
