Cultural Imperialism

Cultural Imperialism

by Barbara
(Brisbane, Australia)

I do not support whaling but am loathe to impose my preferences on those who may seek to engage in whaling for meat consumption traditionally such as the Inuit, Norwegian and Japanese.

While I personally would not eat whale meat, if it does not endanger the numbers of the specific whale species that is being hunted I would rather not try to impose my values on others.
I eat meat, beef, pork, chicken.I have no right to tell another culture that they are 'wrong' and what I do is ok. If I do not provide alternatives I can not seek to impose my belief system on another group of people who have different values.
It is not that I think whaling is a good thing , it is rather that I am not of the belief that I should seek to force change on others.
That said many ideas that were seen as acceptable in the past have only been subsequently changed by activism and protests.
