Toothed Whale Species
"There
are a few different kinds of toothed
whale."
This group includes sperm whales, dwarf and pygmy sperm whales, narwhals, belugas, beaked whales, porpoises, oceanic dolphins and river dolphins.
Sperm Whales
Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest toothed whale. Even though it is smaller than the largest baleen whales, it matches the size of most baleen whales and is larger than many of them. Dwarf (Kogia sima) and Pygmy Sperm Whales (Kogia breviceps) on the other hand are some of the smallest toothed whales.
Narwhals and
Belugas
Narwhals and Belugas are two different species belonging to two different genus but the same family.
Both are toothed and live in Arctic waters.
Belugas are also known as white dolphins and Narwhals are known for the long tusk that males have. Both lack a dorsal fin, possibly because they often swim under ice.
Beaked Whales
Beaked whales also have teeth, and there are more than 20 species of them, including Hector's, True's, Andrew's, Pygmy, Longman's, Shepherd's, Baird's, Arnoux's, Perrin's, Blainville's, Layard's, Hubb's, Ginkgo-toothed, Stejneger's, Bahamonde's, and Cuviers Beaked Whale, and Northern and Southern Bottlenose Whales.
Porpoises
Porpoise Dolphins are also kinds of toothed whale. They include Dalls Porpoise (across north Pacific), Brumeisters Porpoise (along the coasts of South America), Spectacled Porpoise (Atlantic waters), Vaquita (Baja California), Finless Porpoise (along the coasts of Asia), and Harbor Porpoise (coastal areas of north Pacific and north Atlantic).
Oceanic Dolphins
Oceanic dolphins are a large group of whales, all toothed. Some of the best known ones are bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, spinners dolphins, spotted dolphins, Rissos dolphins, Irrawaddy dolphin, Australian Snubfin dolphin, white beaked dolphins, white sided dolphins, Frasers Dolphin, Clymene dolphin, Tuxuci, humpback dolphin, heaviside dolphin, Hectors dolphin, rough toothed dolphin, and melon headed whales, pilot whales, orca (killer whales), and false killer whale and pygmy killer whale.River Dolphins
There are five species of river dolphins in the world, all have teeth and are active hunters. They include the Amazon River Dolphin, Chinese River Dolphin, Indus River Dolphin, Ganges River Dolphin, and La Plata, which, unlike the previous four, lives in coastal waters. The other four live in inland rivers.
