It is up to 10 meters long, weighs up to 8 tonnes, and has a long beak and a short dorsal fin. It is found in waters of Australia, New Zealand, South America and southern Africa.

It is not found in very deep waters. Unlike the Northern Bottlenose Whale, it was never hunted in large numbers, and although they are not easy to spot, it is believed that their populations are healthy.

It is known to migrate and it feeds on squid and possibly other small to medium sized marine animals.
