Fun Facts about Dolphins

"There are some fun facts about dolphins..."

* Some dolphins are called whales (taxonomically they still belong to the group of whales called dolphins).

* Those dolphins are also called blackfish - a misleading name because dolphins and whales are not fish - they are warm-blooded mammals.

* There are six species of them and they all live in deep ocean waters.

* Melon headed whales live in tropical and subtropical waters and very seldom venture into waters as cool as temperate.

* They eat octopus, and they are known to strand in large numbers.

* Pilot whales are very social and live in large pods.

* They are the whales that Faroese Islanders hunt - pilot whales live in large groups and are easy to hunt in large numbers.

* There are two types of Pilot Whales: long-finned pilot whale, and short-finned pilot whale, which likes warmer  waters.

* Pilots are found both in coastal waters and in deep ocean waters.

* Killer Whales or Orcas are the largest of all dolphins.

* They can live up to 90 years.

* They eat anything from fish and squid to seals, sea lions, sharks, and other whales and dolphins.

* Orcas life in life-long family pods.

* Pygmy killer whales live in deep waters in tropical and subtropical waters of Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Like killer whales they eat marine mammals such as other dolphins. But they also eat a fair bit of squid and fish.

* False killer whales are also found in deep warm waters.
