Evolution of Dolphins

"Evolution of dolphins is similar to this of whales."

Dolphins are also whales so their early evolution was common with the evolution of whales.

The earliest toothed whales (a group that includes dolphins) were short beaked and they had shark-like teeth.

They later developed to primitive dolphins, with long beaks and symmetrical skulls.

The melon developed during Miocene, which is when they started develop echolocation.

Then the modern, assymmetrical skull developed.

Today, most cetacean species belong to toothed whales, which are much smaller than the larger, and fewer baleen whales.
